Born in 1979, SUSIL SENANAYAKE holds BFA (hons)(specialization in painting) from the University of Visual and Performing ARTS, COLOMBO, Sri Lanka. His childhood was spent in his village near Kegalle, Sri Lanka where the natural scenic beauty of the land played a crucial role in his development. Susil explains how the vision, visual shapes and colors are most influential in his work and what he hopes for the future of Sri Lankan Art.
Georgio Morandi (1890-1964) said that nothing was more abstract than reality. Similarly the objective of Senanayake is to show the abstraction that nature conceals. Extracting the essence in reality is the aim of his abstract work. He sees his own shapes and compositions there.
Availability of the Internet has played a vital role in the visual impact of contemporary artists. Millions of different styles and concepts overflow the artist world daily. Equally the availability of new materials, which are the products of modern technology have also contributed to changes in global and also Sri Lankan Art.
SENANAYAKE resources are both natural and manmade landscape. Most of them are townscapes. So his contribution is the revelation of the abstract aesthetic values, which are available within one’s surroundings. The techniques of using mixed media, acrylic and paper to achieve texture and three dimensional effects also seems to be a contribution of Senanayake to Sri Lankan art. By doing so he hopes young artist in Sri Lanka to emerge through their talent and hard work. Senanayake also thinks women artists’ contribution to Sri Lankan art is also of significant importance.
Art professionals, architects and even the general public seem to be enthusiastic about art now, but there is always room for improvement. The Governments around the world also should work towards improving the condition of art and they need to pay enough attention on funding art. What we lack are even more art critics. However, happy to say that there is a positive progression.
